In Taupo, several of New Zealands leading triathletes are expected to line up in the world class field including Beijing bound Bevan Docherty and Kris Gemmell, and Olympic hopefuls Shane Reed, James Elvery and Clark Ellice.

In the womens race world number Debbie Tanner will begin her preparation for Beijing with a hit out around the tough Kinloch course. It is not known at this stage whether Beijing contender Andrea Hewitt will race but leading Contact Energy Cup athletes Katherine Anton, Kelly Bruce and Janine Sax are all confirmed starters.

Athens silver medalist Docherty is looking forward to racing at the venue where he started his triathlon career.

This is where I raced my first ever triathlon back in the mid-90s. I was the runner in our school team (Tauhara College) and I wasnt very happy with the effort of the team so next year I entered on my own, said Docherty.  I think I was last out of the water and that was only because dad got pulled out behind me but within three years I was first out of the water and won by over two minutes so yes, I have some history here.

Docherty will not lack company on Sunday with great friend and rival Kris Gemmell amongst a stellar mens line up. Both have already qualified for the Beijing Games with Kinloch marking the start of their racing seasons.
