Tambin texto en espaol. Australias top triathletes will battle it out this weekend in Hobart for the Australian triathlon sprint championships on Sunday. The field will be led by Brad Kahlefeldt, the Commonwealth Games gold medalist, who will take on Tasmanian star Craig Walton, Queensland’s in-form sprint ace Courtney Atkinson, and 2004 Olympian Simon Thompson in a showdown on Hobart’s waterfront.

The women’s field is just as strong, with Annabel Luxford, ITU world under-23 champion Erin Densham, young gun Emma Moffat and “Supermum”, 2004 Olympian Rina Hill.

Triathletes have an unusual understanding of the word “sprint”. The championships entail a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride, and a 5km run.
The course focuses on the city’s historic waterfront and central business district, with a short but relatively steep ascent up Murray St to challenge competitors over the eight laps on the bike and five laps of the run.

Transitions will be located at Princes Wharf, with the finish line back where the race started at Watermans Dock.
“The sprint course is fast and exciting,” race director Kerry Stubbs said yesterday.
“It will be great for spectators, with plenty of sharp turns and steep ascents to test the field.”
The women will compete at 2pm and the men line up at Watermans Dock at 3.15pm.

The morning will be devoted to age group racing over the longer Olympic distance. Kahlefeldt had a stellar season last year, winning 10 of his 13 races, including the Commonwealth gold, four ITU World Cup races, and the Hobart Triathlon.
He was named New South Wales Sportsman of the Year on Tuesday night.

Sunday will be Kahlefeldt’s first race of 2007, and the Gold Coaster said he was raring to go.
“At the end of last year I decided to take a good long break and went off to Thailand and Fiji to relax, clear my mind and try to rest my body,” he said.
“I found that last year’s schedule was pretty intense and I needed to step back a bit.
“I had a nice break and I am feeling fresh and looking forward to racing again.”

Hobart will also host the up and coming stars of tomorrow as the 2007 Hobart ITU Junior Triathlon Oceania Championships, will take place also on Sunday.
