Oceania Triathlon

Vanessa Fernandes has done it.  The Portuguese superstar won her elusive world title today at the 2007 Hamburg BG Triathlon World Championships.  It was not only her first elite world championship but also the first for Portugal.  Three-time world champion Emma Snowsill came from behind to win silver while American Laura Bennett took the bronze, her fourth career medal at the world championships. 

With a wetsuit swim, the usually powerful American swimmers were not able to break away in the water as they normally like to.  Local favourite Joelle Franzmann of Germany delighted the crowds as she led the women out of the water and into transition.  Not far behind were a host of contenders including Fernandes, Aussie Emma Moffatt and a trio of Americans, Laura Bennett, Sarah Haskins and Sara McLarty. 

The most crucial moment of the race came as the women came through the first transition.  Snowsill exited the water just three seconds behind Fernandes but suffered a bad transition and lost critical time.

You can never waste a second and I lost that second in transition, fumbling with my wetsuit but this is racing, it happens, said Snowsill.

The Aussie wasnt the only one to be slowed down during transition; Fernandes also had difficulties getting out of her wetsuit and onto her bike and barely latched onto the lead pack.  By the time Snowsill began the flat, technical 40-kilometer bike course, the 3-second deficit to Fernandes became a 10-second gap.  With Fernandes and Australian Annabel Luxford doing much of the work in the front group, the lead over Snowsills pack ballooned to 43 seconds.  By the end of the fifth lap, the lead fattened to 77 seconds.

After cycling in the lead pack that extended its lead virtually with every lap, the world number one Fernandes headed out onto the run in 11th place.  But it wasnt long before she reeled in the ten women in front of her one by one.  Bennett was the last woman in her sight and early in the first lap, Fernandes surged past her to take the lead for good.  Once she snatched the lead, it was clear she wasnt going to relinquish it.  With the second fastest run time of the day, Fernandes coasted to the finish line, taking the time to savor the moment of her winning her first career world championship.  It was a convincing and satisfying win for the Portuguese sensation, at long last silencing her critics over her inability to win the big one.

I feel very happy because it was not an obligation to win this world championship but it was a goal I had at the beginning of this year, said the newly crowned world champion.  It was a beautiful race today.

With the fastest run time of the day, sub-33 minutes, Snowsill ran all the way back into contention and eventually passed Bennett in the final 500 meters to steal silver.  In three previous trips to the world championships, she had always won gold and though Fernandes thwarted her bid for a record-tying fourth world title, Snowsill called this a personal victory as she faced a deficit of more than a minute.

The race turned out the way the race turned out.  Im not going to go home tonight kicking myself the fact that I wasted a second or two.  Vanessa had a phenomenal race and Im really happy for her, said Snowsill.  You just get those feelings sometimes when its someone elses day and Im just happy to be here.  I knew at the back of my mind, even if I got off the bike with her, it was going to be an extremely hard-fought race.  Shes a phenomenal athlete and its due time that she finally has that world championship title.

Snowsill and her training partner Bennett both collected their fourth career medal at the world championships and moved into a tie for second among all-time medalists.  Bennett, who picked up the biggest payday in the sports history earlier this year in Des Moines, came through in the clutch again, proving shes one of the sports big race athletes.  Bennett was elated to be on the same podium as the sports two major superstars.

I knew Vanessa would catch me and I know where her and Emma are right now.  Hopefully in a years time I can be mixing it up with them but they clearly run a minute into me right now.  Im more than happy to be the next best girl after those two.  Im in great company, said Bennett.

Approximately a quarter million fans gathered in the streets of downtown Hamburg as 77 women took off, vying for the coveted world title.  The German contingent fared well in the first world championships in their country, placing three in the top ten.  Lisk and Anja Ditter both earned spots on the Olympic team as the top German finishers in this race, a designated Olympic qualifier for their team.

Vanessa Fernandes lo ha hecho otra vez. La sper estrella portuguesa ha ganado hoy el ttulo que se le resista en los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatln BG de Hamburgo. No es slo su primer campeonato del mundo sino tambin el primero para Portugal. La tres veces campeona del mundo Emma Snowsill consigui la plata mientras que la americana Laura Bennet se hizo con el bronce, la cuarta medalla de su carrera en los campeonatos del mundo.

Con una natacin con traje de neopreno, las poderosas nadadoras americanas no fueron capaces de romper la carrera en el agua como normalmente les gusta a ellas. La favorita local Joelle Franzmann de Alemania deleit a los aficionados liderando la salida del agua y la transicin de las mujeres. Por detrs a no mucha distancia haba un gran nmero de corredoras entre las que estaban Fernndes, la australiana Emma Moffatt y un tro americano, Laura Bennett, Sarah Haskins y Sara McLarty.

El momento ms crucial de la carrera lleg cuando las mujeres pasaron la primera transicin. Snowsill sali del agua a slo tres segundos de Fernndez pero hizo una mala transicin y perdi un tiempo importantsimo.

Nunca se puede desperdiciar un segundo y yo perd ese segundo en la transicin, al quitarme con torpeza el neopreno pero esto es la competicin y sucede dijo Snowsill.

La australiana no fue la nica en perder tiempo en la transicin; Fernndez tambin tuvo dificultades para quitarse el neopreno y sobre la bicicleta termin de despojarse del neopreno para no distanciarse del grupo lder. En el momento de que Snowsill empez el circuito tcnico de bicicleta de 40 kilmetros la desventaja era de tres segundos respecto de Fernndes que se convirti en 10 segundos. Con Fernndez y la australiana Annabel Luxford trabajando mucho al frente del grupo, la ventaja sobre el grupo de Snowsill se aument a 43 segundos. Al final de la quinta vuelta, la ventaja lleg a los 77 segundos.  

Despus del segmento del ciclismo el grupo lder que ampliaba su ventaja prcticamente con cada vuelta, la nmero uno del mundo Fernndes empezaba el segmento de la carrera en 11 lugar. Pero no tardara mucho tiempo en ir superando una a una a las diez mujeres que iban por delante. Bennett era la ltima mujer a la vista y al inicio de la primera vuelta, Fernndes la super para alcanzar el liderato de forma definitiva. Una vez que ella se hizo con el liderato estaba claro que no iba a dejar escaparlo. Con la segunda carrera ms rpida del da, Fernndez cruz la lnea de meta, con el tiempo suficiente para saborear el momento de la victoria de su primer campeonato del mundo de su carrera. Fue un triunfo convincente y satisfactorio para la sensacin portuguesa, al fin y al cabo haciendo callar a los que criticaban la incapacidad para ganar este grande.  

Estoy muy feliz porque no era una obligacin ganar este campeonato del mundo pero era un objetivo que yo tena al inicio de este ao, dijo la recin coronada campeona del mundo. Ha sido una bonita carrera hoy.

Con el tiempo de carrera ms rpido del da, por debajo de 33 minutos, Snowsill corri todo el camino por detrs y finalmente super a Bennet en los ltimos 500 metros quitndole la plata. En los tres viajes anteriores a los campeonatos del mundo, ella siempre haba ganado el oro y aunque Fernandes frustrase su cuarto ttulo del mundo, Snowsill lo llam a esto una victoria personal ya que lo afront con un dficit de ms de un minuto. 

La carrera se me torci. No voy a irme a casa esta noche dndome patadas por el hecho de perder uno o dos segundos. Vanesa ha hecho una fenomenal carrera y yo estoy realmente feliz por ella, dijo Snowsill.

Snowsill y su compaera de entrenamiento Bennett recogieron su cuarta medalla en los campeonatos del mundo y se sitan empatados en segundo lugar entre los medallistas de todos los tiempos.
Bennett, quien consigui el premio metlico ms grande de la historia del triatln a inicios este ao en Des Moines, vuelve en s otra vez, demostrando que ella es una de las grandes atletas del deporte. Bennett fue animada de manera eufrica por estar en el mismo podium que las dos superestrellas principales del deporte.

Yo saba que Vanessa me atrapara y se que ella y Emma estn ahora por encima. Espero que en un ao yo pueda estar al mismo nivel que ellas pero ellas tiene un mejor tiempo que yo ahora. Yo estoy ms que feliz de ser la siguiente mejor muchacha tras ellas. Estoy muy bien acompaada, dijo Bennett.

Aproximadamente unos 250.000 de admiradores se dieron cita en las calles del centro de Hamburgo para ver como las mujeres tomaban la salida y competan para conseguir el codiciado ttulo mundial. El contingente alemn estuvo bien en los primeros campeonatos del mundo celebrados en su pas,  colocndose tres atletas entre las diez primeras. Lis y Anja Ditter, se han ganado un lugar en el equipo Olmpico a la cabeza de las finalistas alemanas en esta carrera, una clasificacin olmpica para su equipo.

La lite masculina empieza el domingo a las 3pm (CEST). Tim Don de Gran Bretaa defender su ttulo, pero se enfrenta a un gran nmero de grandes competidores internacionales impacientes por destronarlo. El nmero uno mundial Javier Gmez de Espaa encabeza el ataque de hombres en busca de su primer campeonato mundial.
