ITU Congress, Fed Forum this week

By World Triathlon Admin | 25 Nov, 2008

Several ITU leaders and staff have arrived in Madrid, Spain in preparation for ITU’s 21st Congress this weekend.  Also part of the week will be ITU’s Federation Forum, which is aimed at uniting and developing National Federations.  ITU is pleased to announce Debbie Muir will be the keynote speaker.  She is one of Canada’s most recognized and celebrated coaches and will speak on the first day of the Federation Forum.  The 2-day forum includes sessions on Marketing, Media & Television, Events and Sport Development.

It will be followed by ITU’s Gala on Friday night when founding ITU President Les McDonald and Vice-President Chiharu Igaya, also an IOC Member, will be honoured for their contributions to ITU triathlon.  McDonald will retire at the end of this year while Igaya will step down as Vice-President.

ITU Congress and Elections takes place on Saturday November 29.  Marisol Casado (ESP) and Loreen Barnett (CAN) will run unopposed for President and Secretary General respectively, which will make ITU the only Olympic International Federation to have women at the top two leadership roles.  Casado is currently ITU Treasurer and President of the European Triathlon Union.  Barnett is ITU’s current Executive Director and will continue to handle the day-to-day business of ITU in the restructured role of Secretary General.

The most heated battle will be for the Executive Board.  Eleven prominent members of 12 different National Federations are running for seven coveted spots on ITU’s Executive Board.  Also to be elected are the seven committees that make up ITU Council.  They include the Technical Committee, Medical Committee, Constitution Committee, Women’s Committee, Credentials Committee, and Duathlon Committee.
