Miguel Alejandro Fernández Vázquez has an extensive history with the sport of triathlon, dating back to 1999, and values how a team can work together to successfully deliver a world class event, from a technical and operational perspective. We are so grateful for his dedication and commitment to the sport.

How long have you been a Technical Official (TO) for?
Since 1999

How did you get into the role?
I started as a volunteer when I was a kid in 1991 because my father was TO. After my first experience, I went to another city with my father to be volunteer and finally I became a TO.

What are your favourite aspects of the role?
My favourite aspect is that in an event we are not only officiating, we are also working on the same team as the local organising committee (LOC) and always to help the athletes have a good race. to have a good race.
But for me the most important thing is that I always learn something new in an event from the LOC, from the TO team and International Triathlon Union (ITU).

What are the most challenging aspects of the role?
Every new race as a Technical Delegate (TD) is challenging, especially when you are in different countries but I really like challenges!

How important is team work in the role of a TO?
The team is everything and not only the TO´s team, the success of an event starts when the LOC and TO´s are working in the same team.

Where is the most exciting race destination that your role has taken you?
Of course Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games!

Can you recall an inspiring moment at a race?
It’s difficult to decide one. My first European Cup as a TD, in Loutraki (Greece). How the LOC and TO teams manage the race with not many resources but it was very successful, I learn a lot of them, when you want to work and you know how to do it in a team you will get what you propose even with few resources.

Why triathlon?
I´m from a little village called Rábade and every Summer we had our triathlon since 1989. For a village of 1.000 people to have a race with hundreds of triathletes was the biggest event of the year and all the people wanted to help. After my first experience I knew that I would be involved in this sport for many years.
