European Qualification Criteria

By World Triathlon Admin | 12 Apr, 2007

The Triathlon European season will kick off in one month in Lisbon with the third round of the BG Triathlon World Cup series. Two weeks later, the first European Cup events will also take place in the continent. We would like to draw to your attention to some important information to assist you in the coming season.

All the entries of ETU events (Championships and Cups) have to be done via the ITU Online entry system. We are using this system to protect the National Federations to be able to control their athletes competing all around Europe. The qualification criteria for the Continental Cups can be found on the ITU website in the About ITU -> Downloads section.  Thirty days before the event, the start list will be created according to the ITU Points List and the European Ranking. The maximum number of athletes will be 15 from the same country, except the host country which can enter 20 athletes. The maximum number of athletes on the start list will determined according to the guidelines of the ETU Technical Delegate.

The first two events are the San Remo ITU Triathlon Premium European Cup and the Limassol ITU Triathlon European Cup and Small States of Europe Championships. The Italian event is a test event for the future World Cup in the same city and there are more than 100 men already been entered for the event.

The event in Cyprus is the Championships for the Small states of Europe which is open for athletes outside of the small countries eligible for the ITU and ETU points. On the start list of this event there are still plenty of places.

There will be same amount of ITU points given by Premium European Cups and European Cups, but there is a difference in the amount of ETU Ranking points in the 2 levels of events.

The European Cups became important elements of the Olympic qualification with 1-1 Olympic spot per continent assigned according to the Continental Rankings. Also the European Cups will give points for the athletes to be able to get on the start list of the BG Triathlon World Cups and BG Triathlon World Championships.

The European Championships qualification criteria have been updated for all the age categories for each discipline. It can be found on the ETU website (www.etu-triathlon.org) in the Inside ETU -> ETU Downloads section.

In order to have a fair season, please keep all the deadlines written in the various documents. If you need further information, please contact Enrique Quesada (ITU Entries and Ranking Director) at enrique.quesada@triathlon.org or Gergely Markus (ETU Secretary General) at gergely.markus@triathlon.org.
