Team Oceania Athletes meet for Development Camp

By Oceania Triathlon | 15 Mar, 2016

Oceania Triathlon Union recently conducted a triathlon development camp in Sydney, Australia. The camp, conducted over 7 days, hosted 9 athletes and 3 coaches from 4 participating National Federations and was a huge success.

The camp commenced with athletes competing at the OTU Oceania Cup in Wollongong and followed with a week of training, skill development and testing. It was also the first collaboration project conducted between OTU and ASTC.

Head Coach Peter Clifford from Australia facilitated a strong development and learning environment where athletes were motivated to train to higher levels and coaches were able to learn the latest coaching techniques from leading ITU Coaches.

Assistant Coach Stephen Sheldrake from New Zealand said “Having the athletes and coach from Taiwan come into the OTU camp was invaluable. The OTU athletes & coaches got to meet and train with athletes they had never met before and understand the next level up.  This is a model that will work well with other regional camps throughout the world. It was also a great chance to find out more about the large barriers some of the developing nations face as they move forward.

One of the highlights of the camp was a visit to the Sydney Opera House, the birthplace of Olympic Triathlon in the year 2000.

Plans are now set in place to ensure the strategic development of triathlon within the Oceania and Asian regions is maintained as we move forward to competing in key events around the world.
