June Update from the Oceania Triathlon Federation

The last quarter has seen the appointment of Terry Sheldrake in the position ofDevelopment Coordinator for the region, thanks to the ITU’s support.  He has kicked off his role with trips to Papua New Guinea and Tonga. Juliet Fahey was selected as the Technical Liaison for the region

ITU Congress and OTU Meeting in Budapest

The 23rd ITU Congress is in Budapest, Hungary, in conjunction with the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championships.  We encourage OTU National Federations to send delegates to attend the ITU Congress on Friday the 10th of September. The Oceania Triathlon Union will also have a brief meeting in Budapest, and we hope that those countries with delegates and/or athletes in Budapest will attend this meeting.  To assist us with coordinating this meeting, can each NF please send details of those people available to attend by email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and we will be in touch with final meeting details.

Agreement between OTU and Pacific Games Council

The Oceania Triathlon Union and Pacific Games Council have signed a memorandum of understanding concerning the establishment the inclusion of triathlon in future editions of the Pacific Games. The XIVth Pacific Games will be held from 27 August to 10 September 2011 in New Caledonia. A total of 3,500 athletes from 22 Pacific Island countries are expected to compete in 28 sports. Papua New Guinea ITU Level 1 Technical & Event Management Seminar

Terry Sheldrake, ITU Oceania Region Sport Development Coordinator, led a technical and event management seminar in Papua New Guinea in May. A total of 19 enthusiastic participants completed the level 1 technical course. Terry also met with Sir John Dawanincura, Secretary General of the Papua New Guinea NOC.

Tonga Site Visit

Terry Sheldrake completed a site visit to Tonga earlier this month where he examined potential triathlon/duathlon courses, met with key stakeholders, viewed a grassroots duathlon event, and discussed planning with the Tongan Triathlon Association.
